Hi all, happy Juneteenth! One of my favorite Black-owned businesses in the neighborhood, Outlandish, has a great round-up of Juneteenth events across the city, including their own hike planned for Sunday.

In this issue: Park Slope gets a new sports bar at exactly the right moment, Radio Bakery’s newest pastry special, a Michelin guide restaurant in Crown Heights opens its doors to walk-ins, a new Greek spot arrives in Park Slope, a farmers market preview and a neighborhood events roundup courtesy of Alexa Weiser from City Happenings.

A new sports bar has arrived in Park Slope just as New York is getting swept up in sports summer.

The Layup opened Friday at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Bergen Street, just two blocks from Barclays Center, as the city rides a wave of sports fever fueled by the New York Knicks, a surging New York Liberty and the World Cup.

“We’re opening our doors on the same day the U.S. takes on Australia,” said co-owner Fritz Celestin, a Park Slope native better known to many as DJ Fritzo.

The bar, which has taken over the former That Bar space, is positioning itself as one of the area's few true sports bars, offering a wall of TVs and classic bar food.

“We want to be a place that where people from opposing teams can sit next to each other and not fight about it,” co-owner Perry Flicker said.

The team hopes The Layup becomes a home base for Liberty and Nets fans, while also feeling welcoming to everyone—including women, who they say are often overlooked in the sports bar scene.

“At the end of the day, we want people to have a good time,” said co-owner Henry Reillo. “Enjoy your sports, enjoy your neighbors.”
